An early and rude awakening due to some noisy construction workers being outside our room. I don't mind them starting work early but they could at least attempt to keep their voices down (especially when they're talking in a language that I don't understand, so I can't even eavesdrop on what they're saying!).
Unfortunately due to an extended internet session yesterday and us forgetting that all the television quote their schedules in Eastern Time (which is three hours in front of Pacific Time), we completely missed the Oscars. I know who won Best Actor, but Lynne doesn't know any of the results. So we spent the day trying to avoid any mention of the Oscars on television or radio, in the vain hope that they might repeat the ceremony later in the week. I can't even write who won best actor on here, in case Lynne reads it!!
The weather was absolutely vile today, pouring down with rain and really windy too, which led to less than ideal driving conditions on the freeway, because there was so much surface water on the road. This being said, I didn't think today how natural driving in America and on the wrong side of the road now feels, whereas on the first day, I (and Lynne!) was a nervous wreck even thinking about it.
We had a fairly long drive today (about 140 miles) down the 101, we could have got back onto the coastal road, but we didn't think there was much point as the weather meant we wouldn't have seen anything. We're getting back to Los Angeles a few days earlier than we need to, but we didn't want to end up stranding ourselves in a place miles away from the airport and have a mad dash back to the airport on Thursday.
We're actually staying back at the hotel we stayed at for the first couple of nights (in Camarillo), which is a little over 50 miles from Los Angeles International Airport. It was actually quite nice to be back at a place that we already knew our way around (or maybe we're just feeling a bit homesick!). Each town we arrive at normally sees us going through the same routine; thumbing through the phonebook to see where the nearest shops are and to see if by some miracle they have any form of internet cafe. Then using the fairly useless maps in the phone book to try and work out how we get to these places. You only just start to get to know the lay out of a town, when it's time to move on to the next place.
Tonight we started going through all of our bags, to make sure that they're as streamlined as possible for the next leg of our trips. The luxury of having a car is that we have a huge boot to store all our luggage in, however this is a double edged sword because it also means that we've accumulated quite a bit of junk as we've gone along. Lynne is the worst offender because every hotel lobby we go to she grabs every tourist information leaflet that they have on offer. So we had a carrier bag full of the damn things!! Once we're in Fiji, we have to carry all our belongings around on our person, so we'll be sending back any excess possessions back home to England (just one more box for Lynne's parents to store in their garage!).
