Another morning where we wished that the Motel 6 chain could splash out and provide some "Do Not Disturb" signs for their guests. Whilst I admired the work ethic of the maids, I was not so fond of their three attempts to get into our room before 10am. Don't they realise that I'm always busy watching trashy Court TV programmes at that time of the morning?!

Today was time for another one of our weekly "we're not doing very much today" days. We did leave the room for a leisurely wander (if it is possible to wander in a car!) around Watsonville. It's a pleasant enough looking town and it also featured the second High Street of the trip.

At this hotel we're lucky enough to have a restaurant just over the road and doubly lucky that they offer a happy hour between 3pm and 6pm on beer and appetisers. As a result we gorged ourselves on nachos, buffalo wings and lager; eating twice as much as we would normally but only paying the price of one normal meal.

After eating and drinking enough calories to feed a small country for a year, we headed back to our hotel to roll around on the bed, groaning about the size of our swollen bellies. The stupidity of drinking at that hour in the day was a) we couldn't drive anywhere for a few hours and b) meant that I nodded off to an inevitable and slobbery sleep.

Only popping out briefly to the amusingly named Nob Hill Foods for some provisions to keep our blood sugar levels up during American Idol, which has started a new season whilst we've been out here. It's a huge television event in America and is on three nights of the week, as well as being talked about in all the newspapers. In general the standard seemed to be about the same as the English version, but the real joy is watching Simon Cowell (whose teeth seem even whiter now) be rude to the participants. The Americans do not take well to his honest criticism, I think don't think that they're used to being told that their performance was "excruciating"!
