Life on the road isn't all glamour and glitz, having limited space for the number of clothes that we can bring with us, means frequent trips to the laundry. Owing to a long day on the road, this particular adventure in laundry meant that we didn't get into bed until well after 1am.

Still that turned out to be a good thing because about thirty minutes later we heard a bit of a commotion going on outside on the walkway that went passed the door of our room. Being a nosey type, I leapt out of bed to the spyhole in our door, just in time to see some heavily tattooed miscreant being led away in handcuffs by the police. No idea what his crime was, but no doubt he was being taken away to a place where he would be taught that dropping the soap in the shower was not a good idea.

We popped back down the road to Merced after checking out to book a hotel online whilst we were in San Francisco. Surprisingly the internet cafe was open and we found out that it had recently changed hands, hence the opening hours being wrong on their website (I take back all the nasty things I said in my head when we went there and they were closed!). Our luck must have been in today, because we managed to find a bargain hotel that was twenty miles from downtown San Francisco, I'd also been given a $30 discount voucher by hotels.com, so that made it even cheaper.

After one final waist expanding visit to the buffet, we were finally off to San Francisco, enjoying a drive in what was the hottest day we've had for the last couple of weeks. Getting into San Francisco on a Friday night, during rush hour wasn't too horrendous. Although you do have to be prepared to just aim your car for a gap that is about 1cm longer than the actual length of your car and ignoring the toots of the horn and hand gestures. Just a joke Almo Car Hire, honest, the people on the road here are pretty courteous and the nature of the road layouts here, mean that people understand that constant lane changing is commonplace and make allowances for it.

I think that the hotel may have somehow mistaken us for royalty, because the room we've been given is absolutely huge. We even have a balcony to stand on and admire a lovely view of the freeway rushing past our noses!

Tomorrow we're going to head into downtown San Francisco and I think there is going to be a lot for us to see and do here. It also looks likely that tomorrow will be the last nice sunny day for awhile, so there are lots of tourist photos to be taken and white hairy legs to be exposed to the Californian sunshine.
