Another "day off" from our trek around the West, sampling the delights of Bakersfield (and a couple more sandwiches from our favourite sandwich shop in America). I don't think that they're especially healthy, but at least mentally I feel like that I'm not eating junk food and that's what counts I think.

Today was a fruitless attempt to find an internet cafe to check our emails and update what is (in my head) one of the finest travel-logs ever written. Despite the phone book listing that there was one in Bakersfield and us being able to find it using one of the worst maps I have ever seen from the aforementioned phone book. We had our hearts broken when we found out that it had shut "quite some time ago" to quote the words of the shop owner I asked in a nearby shop.

We thought that America would have internet cafes absolutely everywhere, but that's proved not to be the case. In Bakersfield the only internet access we've found is in the Tourist Information Centre, but I don't think they'd be too amused if we spent three hours each on their computer. I think it's because all Americans seem to have lap tops and a lot of places have free wi-fi access, so I guess this makes internet cafes a bit redundant really.

At least our time off from the road has given us plenty of time to watch American television, although to be honest I think it would been more appealing if both of us had previously had full frontal lobotomies. For a start there seems to be more time spent on adverts rather than the actual programmes. They put an advert between the end of the previous programme and its credits, then another set of adverts, the credits of the next programme and then just to top up your advert quota up, yet another set of them.

You can certainly get a very warped sense of what being American is like from their adverts. In an average ad break, you can put yourself further into debt with a loan (even if you have "bad credit or previous bankruptcies"!), sue somebody, get some diet pills or a thousand other types of pills (as long as you can pay for them) and then top up on some fast food (providing the diet pills have worked).

After all that, it's back to Jerry Springer to see the latest pair of cousins admit that they've slept with each other!
