San Diego is a really nice city and unlike the rest of America that we've seen so far, it doesn't seem obsessed with ripping down every single building that's over 10 years old. Especially the downtown area which was called the Gaslamp District.
As we've been over budget every single day so far, we've decided to trade motels for hostels for the next couple of nights. The ones in San Diego have a good reputation and they are much cheaper than hotels. However we weren't quite hardcore traveller enough to check into the single sex dorms just yet, so we had a room for four people that were meant for couples and siblings
Lynne and I were sharing a room with a couple of chaps from Sweden called Marcus and Tommy, who are near the end of a road trip that they've been doing from the East to the West coast of America. They've completed this in just under a month, so God knows how many miles they must have been averaging a day.
Although the hostel is cheaper, obviously it does come with a few downsides, such as shared bathrooms and showers. Also at night it is pretty noisy up until midnight, with blaring music outside in the hallway. Still as has been proved many times before, I can pretty much sleep through anything, so it didn't disturb my sleep. I think what probably helped is that I still seem to have a bit of UK time in me, as by 10pm I'm shattered and then usually awake by about 6am. Still there are six more weeks to get used to American time and I'm sure there'll be plenty of rotting in bed until midday to report before long!
