This is the bit I've been waiting to tell you about!
I'll start with sports! I picked a really good time to come over- the Indianapolis colts made the play-offs and are in the super bowl next weekend (probably the biggest sporting event in America), and the Purdue basket-ball team is in the top ten collage teams of the country.
I've been to two basket ball games so far and watch all the rest on TV (yes collage games are so big they are televised)- they've been a blast! I think I'm going to watch alot more sports when I get back to AUS
The last game I went to had a killer finish. We were down 1 point with 1.5 min to go, then we were up 1 point with 35 seconds to go, but the rivals had the ball and if they scored a 3 pointer it was all over! Then we were up 1 point still with the ball at our goals with 6 seconds to go (time out was called)... oh my goodness it was an intense game!! But we ended up winning 71, 68 with two free shots from a foul in the last 1 second of the game!! It was a spectacular finish!
So that's basketball, football (grid iron) involved going to a mate's house (Mike) ordering pizza, root beer, Mt Dew and Grape soda and watching the game in his basement on a projector
I've also been to MANY fast food places- notably you can see I FINALLY made it to white castle (Harold and Kumar lol), Arby's which is a shredded roast beef burger place, I-HOP with the 4,99 unlimited pancakes, Wendy's (chicken place), Mc Donalds, Pizza places etc. There is soooooooo many fast food chains here it's ridiculous.
I've been to see 'The Book of Eli' movie that's not out in Aus till Feb 25th. Great movie that really gives God's word its proper glory... but with heaps of action and mad fight scenes lol.
Now here's and interesting one.. I went and saw Lady Gaga... (she came to Purdue) why??? I'm still not sure... lol for some reason I decided to go, even though I would never do anything like that in Aus... it was pretty gross lol... she is quite the skank. In two weeks though I will be heading to see skillet and Toby mac perform at Purdue, so that will hopefully make up for it. haha. You can check out some pic's I took with my phone of the concert
Also yesterday I went with Nick and Chas, Jordan, Chas's girlfriend Anna to Indianapolis, check out the photo's
One of the things I missed out on was Aussie day :( I was snowing on my Aussie day!
Oh I've been to some America church's now lol, They sing Hillsong! haha, I was walked right into one as they were singing 'Saviour King' haha. Still going to check out some more church's then I'll aim to make one my home :)
Something that's coming up this weekend is that Fairway is having a house party haha, we have a sub that weighs more then me, speakers... its going to be huge!! Around 300-500 people usually rock up so I can't wait for that haha.
I've also went to a Hookah bar or 'hubbly bubbley', now I hate smoking but I figured this was different and was all good to try once. A lot of the guys in the house smoke cigars... its funny cause it would be frowned upon as a Christian in Australia. Cheak out the photo's
This last few weeks have been a blur- I've probably missed so much cool stuff that I've done.. like Tobaganing... going skiing soon.... etc. Just know that I've been so busy!!! Though even though I'm busy I'm still missing everyone from Aus- it's been soo great to chat to some of you on FB, have an age game with the age boys, and ESP chatting to Emily I miss her soo much!! It's seriously ridiculous haha.
Now for some interesting cultural observations I've made and experienced.
Now University spirit is massive over here!! You can even buy Purdue suggies, bedsets, doormats, number plates (not kidding and seriously every second person has one), clothes, undies, EVERYTHING- I've even got a Pic of Purdue Toothbrush that I saw for sale lol
RED BOX: Red box is amazing- it's basically a DVD vending machine, you find them at McDonalds, and you can rent any movie you want (that's newly come out) for $1 a night! It's soo good!
Also I've found that the fashion here is very different to AUS- I would actually say at least in Indiana people are not really fashionable at all....! No guy wears skinny jeans, except emo's lol... some some people have got the wrong first impression of me, as I wear skinny (not overly skinny though) jeans lol. It is also socially acceptable to buy second hand clothes... apparently. Girls also lack in the fashion department. 1/3 of girls wear ugg boots and track pants to class... its seriously so weird lol. Some of the guys from the house met some of my Aussie friends who were girls and were like 'they were really dressed up'... but I was like 'no it's normal to wear good clothes in Aus lol'. Also 90% of guys have really short hair and none of them wear product in it. Strange lol.
The average wage is also interesting, I've seen guys BRAG about making $10-12 an hour as most guys working at starbucks or a radio station or whatever is it make about $8
The guys in the house are also clued up on the Aussie wildlife such as 'drop bears', and they know how much of a break though to the bush walking industry it was when Banjo Patterson invented the 'pointy hat'. They also know how important it is to keep a knife strapped to ur leg while swimming without shark-nets, so you can poke the eyes of sharks out when ur catching a wave. 'It's no biggie' I tell them, 'They always give you a nudge b4 they bite, and even if they do bite, ur not going to die... probably just loose an arm of something'. HAHAHAHAHA
Speaking of how Americans are not globally educated haha, Here are some questions I've been asked:
Do they have pizza in Australia?
Do they have chicken in Australia?
Do they have fish in Australia?
There were some even funnier ones, but I can't remember haha. I even convinced one guy that we hunted with spears and boomerangs, kangooroo every night for tea.
Also words are different in America.
-Cuss words are much more severe and one that are only mild in AUS are really bad in America
-Far-out means the opposite thing- it means 'that's awesome!', so when someone has been telling me how their mum has cancer and I say 'far out' it doesn't go down too well...
- Somthing that is 'props' is cool
- Keen and bloke, all absent from the American vocab
- Car boots, Rockmelon, jumpers, foot path... all different words
And that's only scraping the surface.
Well that's seems it for now! I hope you are satisfied all the people who have been asking me to update my blog! I'll be sure to let you know all the mad shenanigans I encounter in the next few weeks haha.
Love you all!
