Today was another day form marathon driving. We left Hungary right after breakfast and headed for the open road, hoping to be in Appenzell before dark. We stuck to the freeways this time as the Austrian tolls are much more reasonable than the Italian ones. Our only stop through Austria was Hall in Tirol. Hall in a little town near Innsbruck with a babbling brook and beautiful mountains. When we arrived, the restaurant was not yet open, so we decided to take a stroll through town. It was a Sunday and late in the day so there wasn't anything open, but we enjoyed the scenery and the small-town atmosphere.
On the way back to the restuarant we came upon an elderly lady who was in the middle of a confrontation with some local teens. I don't understand much German, but I could easily understand what was happening. The teens were smoking and drinking and when the elderly lady expressed her displeasure, they started to swear at her too. They left when we cam along and she started to tell me the whole story. I told her that I don't speak German. She said OK, then proceded to keep telling me the story. I nodded a lot.
We had a lovely dinner of garlic soup and spatzle with cheese before again hopping in the car and heading for Switzerland.
