In an effort to once again avoid the toll roads, we detoured through Slovenia on the way to Hungary. We were impressed by the beauty of this little country. Everything seemed so green and clean. The houses we passed on the way had beautiful stone work and gardens. Perhaps we will make this country a destination next time instead of a via point.
We arrived in Tata late at night and spent the evening catching up with Bela. With only three days in Hungary this time 'round, this was to be a short and sweet visit.
In the morning, we drove to Tatabanya in search of bookstores and hardware stores. Attila wanted to buy his mother a heater and a new shower head and I was looking for some children's books (what can I say.... that's my level of understanding of Hungarian). We searched high and low and eventualy found what we were looking for. However, Attila's mother didn't like our choise of merchandise for her so we spent the next day revisiting the same stores we found on Day 1.
On our third day in Hungary, all four of us piled into our Renault Megane and headed south to the Hungarian Historical Park. It is a historic village that recreates 5 centuries of Hungarian history. Interesting but a little broad in scope. I particularly enjoyed the early 20th-Century-style schoolhouse. Attila and Bela pointed out several things that they had in their school -- like an overhead projector that gets its light from a candle!!!! On the way home, we stopped at a restaurant for dinner and Attila let his mother try his Tabasco sauce with hillarious results!
This visit was brief (and a long detour from our other destinations) but Attila enjoyed being home and visiting his family and friends. Now we're off to Switzerland!
