This Civil War battlefield saw the highest number of casualties ( killed, wounded or captured) of any battle ever fought on American soil, 23,000 for the Union and 28,000 for the confederates. This occurred over the three days of July 1st, 2nd and 3rd 1863. The fields of fighting are said to look much the same now as then. Beautiful.

the museum and visitor center for this Gettysburg National Historic Park has a spectacular display featuring a "cyclorama" of the infamous Pickett's charge on the 3rd. this 377 foot painting circles around the visitors and was done in 1884 by Paul Philippoteaux. It is truly awesome, causing civil war veterans to weep when it was first shown. Still pretty powerful even for those not battle scared.

Following a tour of the battlefields we sought out the site of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in the
Soldier's National Cemetery, and then the train station he arrived at in November 1863.
