Where I stayed
Hostel Maria Sabina
I had a one hour stop in Panama. There were so many duty free shops such as Laccoste and many different electronics stores.
I arrived in Cancun around midday and wasn't really sure how to get the bus to Playa del Carmen. Outside the airport I asked one of the many taxis guys yelling at me where to get the bus and his answer was 'at the end of the building'. I hauled my backpack all the way to the end of the building in the stifling heat and found a ticket lady to purchase a ticket from (90 pesos, USD7.50).
During the 45min journey they played the Spanish-dubbed version of High School Musical 2 (the songs were still in English).
Off the bus in Playa del Carmen I found a map and then my hostel - Maria Sabina. The beach was only a block or so from the hostel.
Playa del Carmen is like being in the USA. They have Burger King, McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Haagen Dazs, Starbucks... All of the prices show both pesos and dollars and everyone speaks (usually American) English. The main strip (5th Avenue) is very touristy and pricy.
In the evening I went in search of dinner and was sure that all the places couldn't be so expensive. On 10th Avenue, the next street over from 5th, I found a great little place called Kiwi something. It mainly specialises in cheap sandwiches, but I got tacos instead. For about USD5 I got 3 soft tacos with beef, onion, tomato and a bit of avocado plus a large pineapple juice. The was hot salsa on the bench top to add.
Back at the hostel I went to bed early, still trying to recover from my sore throat.
