Today I left Chile. While waiting in a very slow queue at Santiago Airport very early this morning, I started to reflect on my time in Chile and these are my thoughts:

- Chile feels very safe, both hygiene wise and on the street,  making it an excellent place to start a South American journey.
- Chile has excellent bus transportation that is more comfortable than a plane and always on time.
- Hot water may be available at hostels, but this doesn't mean the water will be hot through the entire shower (sometimes it wavers between hot and cold), nor will there always be much water coming out of the shower.
- Patiperro Hostel (in Valparaiso) is a very friendly hostel that I felt at home in and would highly recommend.
- Remember to take a map when wandering the hills of Valparaiso as it is easy to get confused  as to which valley your hostel is on.
- Watch out for pollution when thinking of swimming in the sea near big cities.
- Knowing some spanish is a great way to save money as you can ask the locals for advice - Chileans are very friendly.
- New Year's in Valparaiso - the port seemed to have the biggest party.
