Where I stayed
Hostel Maeva Montreal

Flag of Canada  , Quebec,
Thursday, May 6, 2010

We were right to be concerned, and as we crossed into Quebec and approached Montreal we hit the traffic big time. It was only a 3 hour drive from Ottawa, but one wrong turn as we entered the city and another 3 hours later we emerged from the gridlock in the dark and hadn't given a second thought to where we could stay. Is that Walmart beckoning so reassuringly in the distance?! Sure was, so we ditched the car and enjoyed what was left of the evening strolling around Old Montreal - a picturesque district with cobbled stone lanes and old victorian buildings housing nice bars and restaurants.

We checked into a hostel first thing the next morning and spent a lovely, sunny (but cold) day wandering around downtown, the old port, china town, etc. One area of the city, the Quartier Latin (apparently this translates as the Latin Quarter...who said French was easy?!) contains the University and was student central, full of book shops and day long al fresco drinking sessions. Blending in well with the 'living on a shoestring' society on Rue St Denis, we had some super cheap but really nice thai food. Montreal also has an underground city - a 30km network of walkways, shops, and metro trains, and it was pretty handy being able to walk nearly all of the way home underneath the pavement and out of the cold wind. Montreal is definitely on the 'places to return to' list.
