After the fat man bus experience it was nice to get to San Francisco even if a little cold compared to the searing temperatures of Vegas (It was only about 30 here!). After a quick snooze it was into full sight seeing mode again and we were off up and down the hilliest of hilly streets through the city's vast China town down to Fisherman's Wharf and the millions Of Camera and Souvenir shops in the vicinity. Despite being Ultra touristy was it was actually very nice (unless your a crab cause they were getting cooked left, right and centre!) but it was a bit early for seafood so we settled for a Subway! We spent the evening in our Hostel with a few beers, a pool table and table football (which Dan has rapidly improved at due to some expert coaching!) and had an early night for the next mornings early start.
Due to lack of time we decided to do an organised tour which started off with a morning tour of Muir Woods, just over the Golden Gate bridge and home of the tallest trees in the world. Following our forest walk we stopped for Lunch ( Fantastic Fish and Chips) on the way back in the little village of Sausalito, with the most amazing view of San Francisco (one that inspired Otis Redding to write Sitting on the dock of the bay) and the countless Ferrari's driving about it was easy to believe our guide when he told us the average price for property was around $65 million!!!. After a lengthy discussion we decide not to buy a holiday home there and continued to the last leg of our tour, Alcatraz. The ferry to Alcatraz takes about 20 mins and although it doesn't look far, the rough, freezing cold water must have been a very strong deterrent for anyone thinking of attempting escape, an almost impossible task. The self guiding tour takes about 45 mins and despite being slightly over crowded was very interesting you could see that it must have been hell for the notorious criminals it housed throughout the years.
We followed our hectic two day San Francisco schedule with a day of rest (and beer and table football!) before setting off for the airport and our 8 hour flight to Hawaii.
