Day 78-85

So we arrived from the Cameron Highlands by bus in Kuala Lumpur (KL). We had booked to stay at a place called the Mantahari Lodge just of the main market street (Petaling) in China Town. It had some good reviews online so we booked for 7 nights. We originally thought that this was going to be too long but as it was Christmas we didn't want to be moving around a lot. KL is a thiving city that has lots to offer. The first couple of days we spent orientating ourselves around KL. We went to the Golden Triangle where there are many shopping malls, Emma loved this but after a couple of hundred shops you just  keep on saying Same, Same. However the Times Square mall has hundreds and hundreds of shops, 2 cinemas, a theme park with roller coaster and lots more. This was fun and interesting to be shopping and hearing the screams of people on the rides.

By Christmas Eve we had made a few friends, the Chinese girls at the lodge, Nick, Justin and Tony. And who could forget the Sweedish girl who was drunk all day every day. We had decided to that day to go to Bird World, the world's largest free-flight walk-in aviary. Grandad Horlock, Nanna Redfern and Nick and Pam would have loved it and Katies Northover and Amy Keates would have hated it! The park has 4 different zones and is home to over 3,000 birds. This was fantastic, we had never been so close to birds like Peacock's, Heron's and Flamingos before. There are a few pics on the blog of this and a video of Emma getting attacked by Lory birds.

In the eveing the wonderful girls at the Mantahari Lodge put on a spread for all the people at the hostel which included 4 different potato dishes and jugs of mojitos. Everybody got very merry, we did a few Merry Christmas videos (see blog) to people back at home including one in Slovakian. A great time had by all. Thanks girls!

We had tried a couple of days previous to book in for a christmas dinner at a local English restaurant but it was fully booked. So for lunch we had noodles and for dinner we had Pizza. Throughout the the afternoon we had our christmas hats on and were often called Mr and Mrs Santa. In the evening we went to the Sky Bar which is situated at the topp of Traders Hotel and has a stunning view of the Petronas Towers. So all in  all we had a very relaxed Christmas Day. Very different from what we are used to. Hey, it still beats being at work. Sorry guys ;)

We went for a walk around KL park and had a picnic with Justin. KL park has many attractions including a deer park, bird world, orchid garden, national museum and also the local monkey's. It was very nice strolling round the lake and soaking up the rays. We had managed to get a roast dinner for boxing day with wine and pudding which all went down really well. When we got back to the hostel we had Christmas Pudding with custard which Danny had been carrying for 3 months. Thanks level one for that it was lovely!

During our stay in KL we went to a place called the Regge Bar where good times were had. On our last day we also visited the Batu Caves which is a series of caves and cave temples. The cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India. It also has the largest Murga statue in the world. While we were in KL we also had problems with our netbook. Somehow we had got a virus on it and we lost most of our pictures in KL. We kindly had the help from Michelle and Tony in fixing it. However when we moved to Melaka we had the same problems so Danny basically formatted the hardrive. Anyway. Danny was glad that he managed to retrieve 50% of the pics from the SD card by using a computer program. The moral of the story is 'back up your photos when backpacking! Oh we almost forgot Emma got her hair cut for 2 pounds by a Lady Boy.
