Up until now my time in Namibia has been amazing but one of the main reasons that I came to Namibia was to view the amazing Dune scape at Sossusvlei. This part of the Namib desert contains miles and miles of huge spectacular looking red dunes, which tower up to 350 meters tall making them three times larger than those found in Morocco!
We left Swakopmund and drove south passing through the several mountain passes and the tiny, isolated town of Solitaire before finally arriving at Sesriem and the start of the dunes. That evening before it got dark we had about an hour to climb one of the "small" dunes near camp to watch the sunset. In the morning we headed to Dune 45 which is close to the road and climbed it to watch the the first rays of sun break through the cool morning air.
After that an Austrian friend and I decided to conquer "Big Daddy" which is over 300 meters tall. The a long trudge to the top we were greeted with an amazing view of the surrounding desert. When we finished taking photos it we got the bright idea that it would be fun to run down the side of the dune. I ran so fast down the side that I felt like my legs were moving like the road runner from Looney Tunes and unfortunately my camera was destroyed by sand in the process. May my Canon Powershot SD10 rest in peace.
