Where I stayed
Cherry Hill Campground, College Park, MD
This is the fort that the British tried to take from the United States. Francis Scott Key witnessed the battle as a prisoner on a ship and it inspired him to write the Star Spangled Banner. "Oh say can you SEE!!...."
The kids earned their third Junior Ranger badge! And Ben and Katrina acquired fancy Junior Ranger hats.
Then we set out for Gettysbug, PA. So we show up at 4:30, and ask for the "Reader's Digest verson" of the Gettysburg experience. The ranger kinda rolled his eyes at us
Then we buy a CD that narrarates us through the battlefield. I was at the counter in the souviner shop. The cashier says I look familiar to him. I tell him he can't possibly have seen me before - I'm from the LA area. He says "oh, I used to live near there in Thousand Oaks!" I say "Uh, yeah, that's where I'm from." But the coincidence stops there. He moved in '91....I didn't get to TO until '95.
And then another BIZZARE coincidence happens! We are looking for where the audiotour starts. Pretty much everyone has gone home by now. We have 2 hours before sundown to get through this place. As we start the CD, we have to pull over into a parking lots until it gets to the part where we can start driving. Then I see someone familiar waaaay over across the parking lot. Is that Mary Maki's husband? Gee, sure could look like him....and his daughter....and is that his son...and Mary Maki?!?! Yep! Mary and I talked at the PTA end of year luncheon and I knew she was going to DC this summer, but I didn't think we would even be here at the same time, much less going to Gettysburg on the same day!!! So of course, Phil drives us over to them and we get to talk with them. (He's getting used to this)
So, we do the whole Gettysburg driving tour alllll over the place. Stopping at each interest point. The kids did pretty well. It's a lot to take in! They completed their Junior Ranger badge, but it was too late to turn it in. We'll have to mail it. It was the hardest one to complete!
Tomorrow we have passes to tour the White House!
