Beautiful Nepal
Entry 44 of 58 | show all | print this entry |
Sinead: After a 13 and a half hour train journey from Delhi to Gorakhpur in India, a 3 hour bus trip from there to Sunauli on the border with Nepal, a cycle rickshaw to the Indian border, another one on the Nepali side to Bhairawa and an 8 hour bus journey from there, we finally arrived in Pokhara last night. We are staying at the Butterfly Lodge, a guest house where the profits go towards the running of the Butterfly foundation, educating children from the poorest families and taking care of them during the day so that their parents are more available for work. We got the most fabulous welcome from the chairperson of the foundation and were whisked to our rooms, without even having to sign in, we must have looked as jaded as we felt!
On crossing the border from India, there was a noticeable change in the disposition of the Nepalese. In India, few people smile and here in Nepal, few don't! Those we came across on the journey up from the border were much more gentle with each other and fun loving than in India. The bus was shaking with laughter for a good portion of the journey. The ladies wear the same elegant saris as in India, the same vibrant colours and the men wear a little cloth hat like a tea cosy.
The scenery changed drastically within an hour of the border also, with soaring mountains and plunging valleys replacing the relatively flat terrain of India. Some of the roads we were on were not for the faint hearted and as i was on the side nearest the unprotected, staggering drops to the sides, i was beginning to question the quality of my own heart! Winding terraces took up every available space on the mountain sides and the houses and surrounds in the small villages we passed through were meticulously clean. The houses were all made of what seemed to be mud brick and the majority of them were washed in various colours, from rust red, to green, to pink and white.
The mountains are towering above us here in Pokhara also and we spent the day today looking into our options for getting up close and personal with them in the coming days, and there are lots to choose from, after a day or two's relaxation in this beautiful town.
