Can I Clean Your Ears Sir?!
Entry 41 of 58 | show all | print this entry |
Damian: We arrived in Delhi at about 3am on Saturday morning after a half hour wait on the tarmac for a space to clear at the terminal. Our first busy queue. We had booked a hotel and an airport pick-up because we were arriving so late and it was money well spent. Outside the airport were just loads of black cabs plucked from the 1950's and rickshaws (like Thai tuk-tuks, 3-wheeled motorbikes with a seat in the back for passengers). The lack of lighting added to the athmosphere for the beginning of a new adventure. The ride to the hotel was interesting, lanes didn't serve any purpose and as Sinead said, red lights were just for decoration. Welcome to India.
We left our hotel, which is just off Main Bazaar, after a bit of a sleep-in to check out the local market. It was literally an assault on the senses. The sights, sounds and smells brought us right back to the souks of Marrakech. After walking about 10 yards a guy was walking along side me asking me where I'm from, "Staying long in Delhi Sir?" etc. and finally after a few short answers from me he arrived at the punch line...."Can I get you something to smoke Sir?" Eventually we had enough of being offered this that and the other so we headed to Connaught Place a nice park in the center of Delhi. We went to the tourist office to organise a trip around the city for the next day and then strolled through the park. It wasn't long before we were asked to buy a few things and we just politely refused. A few moments later I was approched by a guy brandishing a pair of cotton buds. "I would like to clean you ears Sir!" - (What the....?) "No thank you", I replied. "Its very nice Sir, feels great, look at my book". He pushed a little notebook with written "testimonies" from previous happy customers. After he heard I was from Ireland, he opened a page featuring the appraisals of Liam Donovan from Ireland. I never knew people from different countries had different makes of ears?!
In all, we are really enjoying Delhi. It is so different to anything else. There seems to be a structured chaos which works after all - and the food is just outstanding (even if we are just sticking to vegetarian option)!
