We had a 6am start from Rotorua to drive down to a village called Whatapapa (Maori names only seem to ever begin with W, M or T) where we had arranged a pick up so we could be dropped at the starting point of the Tongariro Crossing. This is a popular one day trek (or tramp as they say in Kiwi) across the volcanic scenery of the Tongariro national park. We got a great day for it without a cloud in the sky which was great cos there are some green mountain lakes that look cool in the sunshine. The walk is supposed to take between 6 and 8 hours but we got a burst of energy on the downhill section and did it in just over 5. Seemed like a great idea at the time but neither of us could walk the next day! That night we stayed in a motel in the tiny village of National park just took it handy after our exertions.
