On the way from Munich to Prague we stopped about one hour outside Prague at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery for a tour. The Pilsner beer was the first golden Pilsner beer brewed in 1842 and today half of all beer consumed in Czech is Pilsner Urquell beer.  They can brew up to 120,000 bottles of beer per day (amazing what you learn on a tour).

The tour was actually very interesting, mainly because of the history associated with the brewery.  On the drive from Munich we passed fields that had these telegraph poles staked in massive grids with plants growing up wires strung between them up to a grid of wires that formed a type of roof.  We did not know what crop it was until we did the brewery tour.  Apparently the crops were hops, the best hops in the world that are used in the Pilsner beer.  The beer is bottom filtered and triple fermented with the hops (so we were told) which makes the flavour, golden and consistent.

Best of all we got to taste some of the beer that they brew and then distill in the old style barrels in the old cellars.  There are 9km of underground cellars that were used with the old wooden barrels, until they changed and started distilling in massive stainless steel tanks.  The beer was cloudy but it tasted really good, even Colton liked it!

After the brewery it was off to Prague.
