Brisbane is only about an hour from Gold Coast by bus. Architecturally, it's a miss mash of a load of different styles. Oh and there's a fake beach - like something out of the Truman Show. Mad, but a good idea really. Don't have a beach? Make one. We got refused a bed at Brisbane City Backpackers when we tried to check into. They were fine until Michael gave them his Aussie drivers license. Manager (who was Irish): Eh sorry you need two backpacks to check into a dorm. Michael: What do you mean? Manager (she was Irish you know): You only have two small bags and one backpack. Us: So? Manager (did i mention she was Irish)?: You both have to have backpacks to get beds in the dorms. Michael: Lets go. They're weird on the east coast about Aussies checking into Hostels. It happened before but Michael had his Maltese passport that time. Anyway, got a Hotel. Met up with Anna Kavanagh a former colleague of Ailbhe's from Newstalk. She had a camera but lost all her photos so we've no record of us ever meeting except for the memories! We also hooked up with Michael's friends Toby and Christine who used to live in Dublin. They brought us to the Casino Restaurant for dinner which was really nice. When we attempted to go into the bar afterwards to watch the Tennis Final we were stopped as Ailbhe and Toby were wearing thongs/flip flops. So, we drove to a lookout where we got a night view over Brisbane - no camera. Actually we've no photos of Brisbane at all..oh well!
