Wellington was always going to be a quick stopover. Pushed for time, we only stayed a night. It's the capital and unlike many capital cities is refreshingly unpretentious. We were booked into the Mercure Hotel. Eventually found it (it's not an easy city to drive around) and realised when we got there we were in the wrong Mercure. We were sent up the back hills to the other one and threw our bags down. Went into town for a bite to eat. There's lots of restaurants and cafes, so visitors are spoilt for choice. We found an Indian in the Courtney area which did two for one. Took a drive down to the port and headed back to the Hotel for a decent night's sleep. The next day we went to a lookout above Wellington and patted each other on the back for the joint decision not to walk up the hill. We continued onto the Te Papa Museum which is unreal. It's really high tech so great fun for both adults and kids! Free admission. We didn't spend long enough there as we had to get on the road.
