Perth is the second sunniest city in the world after Honolulu according to one Tour Guide, so it's no wonder the Irish are flocking to work there in droves. We traveled over to visit Ailbhe's cousin, see some of the west coast and catch the first International Rules game. In terms of getting around, Perth is easy peazy. We were staying in North Perth which is ten minutes from the CBD (eh, which is dead at night). The first day we headed into town, it was about 28 degrees - perfect weather for an outdoor exhibition of photos at the city museum so we spent about an hour there (now, you could only do that in the 2nd sunniest city in the world). Walked to Northbridge which is the place people go out and where backpackers stay. Kings Park looks out over the city. Good views and a great place to have lunch or a picnic. There's also a walk you can do on an elevated bridge which brings you through the trees, or the tree tops rather. Perth is the most isolated city in the world and is located on Swan River famous for its black swans. Just like white swans dipped in charcoal! We did a day trip to Rottnest Island. So called because the first person to land there saw little creatures that looked like big rats. They called it Rats Nest..we landed there with trepidation but basically quokas look like small/tiny kangaroos..large rats to an extent! There are no cars on the island, no one lives there so everyone rents bikes and cycle around it. We went to Oliver Point which was an army base during the war. We hopped into the water and hopped out again, it was freezing but a great area for snorkling. Back in Perth we swam at Cottesloe beach which is probably one of the nicest beaches in Perth along with Scarborough. Freemantle is the main port for the city and the town that has been built up around it is really popular. Lots of coffee places etc and great for op shops (charity shops)! We were told WA (Western Australia) also stands for Wait Awhile..because there's no rush to serve customers..all in all, a very laid back place. Thanks Mags and Spoons for a wonderful week! x
