Takayama has preserved the feeling of a castle town, apparent by its history-filled streets. With the latticed bay windows and linked eaves of merchants' houses in Sanmachi Suji, the enduring historical temples and shrines of Higashiyama.
Very cute country town. Took a walk in the woods, got lost (just as tourist information told us, if we didn't stick to the path!). We were all 'templed out' by the end of the day - then we actually stayed the night in a Hostel which was an old Temple.
Had food in a local joint. Didn't have a clue what we were ordering and were more worried when an oul guy beside Michael laughed at our food request. It was like a block green chewing gum, but not tasty gum. Rough.
Slept well in the temple. Up early the next day for early train to Tokyo.
