The Great Wall is...well, GREAT! We went to the furthest stop from
Beijing - Jinshanling to trek to Simati. Most people get tours from
Hostels/Hotels/Tour Companies, but after much shopping around, we
decided to make our own way there and do it ourselves. We got the 980
bus from the main bus station at 7am, fell asleep and woke to a woman
saying it was our stop. We got off and realised we'd been done. The bus
drove off and she handed us over to a taxi driver who wanted 200 yen to
bring us to our destination. Having done the research, we knew the
going rate was 100 yen. We were not happy and flagged down the next
bus. But before we got on they agreed a price of 80yen for 80km (we
were going to have to get a taxi further down the road to get to the
wall anyway) and we were brought to Jinshanling. It's advertised as a
10km trek but it took us 2.5 hours (not rushing, apart from the time we
ran away from an old lady trying to sell us water), it just couldn't
be. It was a beautiful day and the view was spectacular. Really worth
the trek, we barely met a soul. It's pretty delapitated in parts, but
that was all part of the fun! Best thing we experienced in China.
