Wednesday: after making a last minute and crazy ass change to my ininerary, I pack my bag and prepare for what is going to be a very long and exhausting weekend. Today I was traveling with the school to Maastricht, Holland and Brussels, Belgium; with an overnight stay in Brussels. As I rode my bike to class, I realized just how much crap I was carrying; my bag weighs at least 35-40lbs. I'm carrying clothes, a liter of water, all my camera gear, a towel, and lots of emergency stuff I probably won't need. We were taking a van up to Maastricht, and I was of course going to be using the train a lot, so I had my mp3 player and a book as well. unfortunately, we were only going to spend a few hours in Maastricht. We were given a very informative tour by a local. I'll jus rattle off a few facts here; Maastricht has been invaded 21 times since it was founded by the Romans. The reason is because it had one of the only bridges along the river that it is founded upon. When asked why the allies took an extra few months to free N. Holland, Eisenhower said "You had the bridge." In Holland, buildings used to be taxed on the number of windows, therefore the more windows, the more moolah a person had. Doors are so tall in Medieval buildings because people kept their horses inside at night; either in the house or in a courtyard. After having out for a few hours, we had to leave for Brussels. We had only a few hours to explore this evening. I did as much exploring as I could during the daylight; this is a huge city of 2 million so there's only so much I can do. I bought some bread rolls and a meat log for dinner because all the restaurants are so damn expensive. I went out to do some night shots with Tim, Jess, and Laniese later that night.
