Where I stayed
As we burnt in the shade the day we were traveling to Cairns we decided to stay out of the sun, a good job really as it was overcast all day anyway. We updated our blog and got it up to date with all photos etc too. Rained heavy for about 10 mins when we was doing so.
We then walked around Cairns in the evening, checking out the lagoon.. Saw that there are free exercise classes every day in and around the lagoon / park. Mental note to make it to one of them at least.
As we were walking home after a bit of food shopping we saw a beautiful rainbow (see pics!), I've never seen the whole of one before! But, we should've known what was coming after that.... Monsoon!!! Well, it seemed like one anyway haha.. Heavy heavy rain and we both got drenched. Was quite nice though, warm rain = )! Treated ourselves to spag bol as we found meat that was reduced in the supermarket. There's something to it you know... Hang around a supermarket an hour or so before closing and they wanna get rid of stuff cheap, it's brilliant! And I'll be doing it at home from now on (if they do it there!)
As we treated ourselves to some meat yesterday we went to the lagoon and used one of the outdoor BBQs one day in Cairns.. Couple of burgers & sausages for lunch.. Nom nom! These Aussies love a Barbie!
We then sunbathed all day at the lagoon - in and out of it to cool off.. 33 degrees ..Ouchy! We're getting used to it, sort of!
On other days we spent time at the lagoon with James, Livvy and Georgie just chilling out sunbathing and eating McDonald's ice creams. A cute old man gave us animals he weaved out of palm leaves bless him.
After debating all day whether to spend money we don't have on snorkelling so we could see the Great Barrier Reef we decided to book it for the next day... and aren't we glad we did! YOLO baby.. You only live once. It was an amazing day. We got a ferry over to green island which was formed from lots of broken corals. It was beautiful. We got our wetsuits and snorkel gear on haha how unattractive it is! And we decided to give the snorkelling a go... Both a bit scared at first and took a while to get used to breathing only through our mouths but after a while we got used to it and it felt like second nature, we had a great day. We saw some huge fish and some really beautiful ones all different colours just on one fish. It was funny watching them and hearing them eat from the coral underwater, its a whole different world. The coral and other sea life were also really pretty and it was really something and quite peaceful just to watch them all go about their lives. As I was taking a photo of George swimming I saw a turtle close-ish to her and shouted for her to swim over to it and she swam with the turtle :) when I got in later we decided to see if one would be over in that area again and there was! I got so excited!!! Was amazing to be a metre behind it seeing all the patterns on its skin. Brilliant moment for both of us!
We also went on a semi submarine which was a bit claustrophobic but you got to see the Great Barrier Reef in another way. The pictures do not show up all the amazing colours. Definitely worth doing. We were very tired at the end of the day but completely buzzing!
On our last day we just spent it topping up our tans at the lagoon and chilling in the hostel in the evening before we left at 3.30am to go to the airport.
First plane to Sydney then plane to Bangkok!
We've had an amazing time in Australia and we both agree that the Great Barrier Reef snorkelling trip was our favourite moment in Oz. wW both have a feeling this isn't the last we'll see of Australia.. So.. Until next time!
