We were tired and decided to slow down for a day.  After a late breakfast at the Old Courtyard we got an auto rickshaw to take us to the "Dutch Palace".  It is a wood palace that wasn't built by the Dutch, but was rather restored by them about 300 years ago to gain trading rights with the local rulers.  It is now under going a much needed restoration.  It is unspectacular except for some wall murals inside depicting Hindu legends.  Those make the stop worthwhile.

We were going to take a couple of ferries to an island Kerry's friend recommended for lunch. but our driver misunderstood (maybe on purpose) and drove us into town.  We didn't realize where he was going until he was way past the dock.  Rather than turn around, we told him to go ahead and drive us.  When we got to the island hotel, made from another renovated palace, it was too early for lunch.  We decided to sit in the bar where we drank a bottle of an excellent Indian Chenin Blanc.  It was nice to have a break from the hectic schedule and have time for conversation.

The hotel is nicely renovated with beautiful grounds and a great pool, but it is totally isolated.  The only other point of interest on the island is the golf club.  A tiny pitch and put with totally made up yardages.  The only hotel guests were a group of business men attending a conference.  We joined them for the buffet lunch which was mediocre at best.  My guess is that Kerry's friend liked the setting but hadn't actually eaten there.

We had the choice of a long drive or short ferry ride back to Fort Kochi.  We choose the ferry.  The line was long and the ferry was small.  We had to wait for over an hour for the 10 minute crossing.

We weren't very hungry by dinner time so we went to the small "Tea Pot" cafe for a snack.  The tea was excellent but we were disappointed that they were out of the "Death by Chocolate" dessert.  I guess we'll live to tour another day.

Carolyn -- great stuff! I'm exhausted just reading through this....and hungry. Too bad about the elephant -- that will haunt me.
