I just got done with my open water and advanced open water scuba diving certificate. I went down to the area of Sipidan, which is located in Southeast Borneo. It is known as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. I booked my scuba vacation with Billabong Scuba weeks in advance becasue Sipadan only allows 120 divers a day and it books out very early. I stayed at Billabongs home stay on Mabul Island which is right off of Sipadan.

While I was there I met good friends such as Juan, Jose, Christina, Joe, John, Johnny, Susanne, Kate, Rose and Eljar. It was a great week. Some of the highlights of the trip were; drinking Tanduay which is a Pilipino rum that is bootlegged into Malaysia, going to a local wedding and being asked to dance on stage with the natives, drinking out on the docks and singing classic songs together while the locals jammed on their guitars, all the little local kids smiling and saying hello when you walked by, and most of all…. the diving. I dove with sea turtles, barracudas, cuttlefish, octopus, frogfish, leaf fish, lion fish, eels, sea snakes, and a hundreds of other types of creatures. I would have to say the best part of the diving was swimming with sharks. I even snuck up on one and touched his tail.

My home stay was situated right on top of the turquoise blue water that was crystal clear. One morning I woke up with a hangover and I went to go throw up off the back of the balcony and below me was a turtle and a flounder swimming. This was definitely an upgrade from the bottom of a toilet.

Some of the things I did not like were; eating the same shit with a different smell…we had fish, chicken, cabbage, and watermelon for lunch and dinner every night, taking a squat shit because the toilet had no seat (at least they had toilet paper), the ants that invaded my room every other night, and having to leave.

Overall this was one of the best experiences of my life. Good People, Good Diving, Good Fun. Now I am off too the Jungles of Borneo.
