Although not one of the prettiest coastlines in the world, you can sure count on getting as much sun as you want on the Ecuadorean coast. Aside from being a little crispy as of late, we have been soaking up the sun and stuffing ourselves on ceviche, fish, fresh fruit, batidos (blended fruit and milk), and coconut icecream for the last few days now.
We spent an unusual Christmas and the days leading up to it swimming and body surfing in the ocean, celebrating the holidays with a few cocktails while listening to rival bars battle over who can play Bob Marley hits the loudest and attending a pig roast at the place we were staying at in the little beach town of Canoa. Great little place but the people in the joint we were staying had been there for weeks -- doing nothing more than smoking, drinking and taking up the hammocks. I was a little happy to get away...
After Xmas we traveled south along the coast through a dead-looking dryforest to an unattactive but one again friendly town called Puerto Lopez. It also just so happened to be the jumping off point for the poor mans Galapagos. From what we heard in Canoa, P. Lopez was ugly, dirty and not a place to stay. Maya and I liked it from the minute we arrived. Two days ago we went on a nice excursion out to Isla de la Plata and saw blue footed boobies, more birds, sea turtles as well as a ton of cool flora and fauna while snorkeling in a cove off the island. Yesterday was great fun too. We took a bus a few km north and hiked through the dryforest to one of Ecuadors most famous beaches, Los Frailes, in Machalilla National Park. We had a great time there but spent most of the day at some equally beautiful secluded beaches to the north that we had all to oursevles. Last night I learned the coolest thing from some little kids in the streets too. You can use steel wool as a makeshift firework. All you have to do is buy a pack (three for 20 cents), light the end and then whirl them at your side in a circle. Soon they take light and Kabaam, you are a self proclaimed fire dancer. You can tell I was quite enthralled with the idea can´t you? Don´t worry, I´m packing some North. Fireworks are a big thing here around New Years so I´ll definitely have a trick up my sleave for the festivities.
We also met a very nice group of travelling Colombians whom we hung out with on Isla de la Plata and again the next night. We´re making plans on meeting them in Montanita and if it all works out, in Bogota as well. It is always nice to have friends in unknown places that is for sure... It´s just started raining here like crazy and the power has flickerd a few times already so I´m gonna save this entry and call it good before I lose it all. Tomorrow we head an hour further south to the touristy but supposedly really fun Montanita for a few days. More thumbnails ...
