We packed up camp in the dark this morning so that we could get an early start and be in Washington for lunch.  Good plan, we were having lunch at the Cherry Hill caravan park by 1.30pm.  We pitched tents, set up camp then headed for the pool.  Today was definitely our hottest day so far, a beautiful 34c.  Our little English friends have been doing it tough for the past few days, they are all full of lumps and bumps from mozzie bites, not a pretty sight.  Fred & I seem to be immune from the nasty little buggers.  Perhaps they don't like the taste of Barcadi & coke.
We left Cherry Hill at 5pm this evening for a picnic in Constitution Gardens.  The idea was to see some of the war memorials by night.  The Lincoln memorial was one of my favourites, there was a lot of activity going on there as preparations were in full flow for the 50th anniversary of the Martin Luther King freedom speech scheduled for Wednesday 28th.   President Obama is due to address the nation, can't believe that we will miss this historic event by 1 day.The Martin Luther King memorial was very impressive, as was just about all the memorials we saw that night.  We finished off with a walk to the White House.  My first impressions of Washington are very favourable, it looks like a really nice city.
PS It's not Matt's birthday till the 29th, but being as though he only misses it by one day, we all decided that it was a good excuse to have another birthday cake.  That makes 4 birthday cakes in 3 weeks.  That must be some kind of record.
27/8/13 Washington DC (District of Columbia)
We had a free day today, a good opportunity for everyone to do their own thing.  Fred & I caught the bus and subway into the city.  We had our first encounter with the locals and I have to report, they were not friendly.  First of all the bus driver didn't speak, I asked him something about the return fare, he mumbled something and turned away.  The woman at the subway ticket office was just plain rude, annoyed at us for even asking a question.
We went to Capital Hill, then retraced our footsteps back to the white house, called in to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and the American History Museum.  It was very hot, we'd walked miles and Fred's feet were protesting.  We barely scratched the surface on all the wonderful monuments and museums.  You'd need a few more days to see everything. I really liked Washington.
We had another not so nice encounter with a bus driver on the way home.  The No 83 Cherry Hill Park bus pulled up at the Subway station, Fred & I got on and as we did I just wanted to check with the driver that he was going to Cherry Hill RV Park.  He very rudely replied "No"  I said.  "But it does say No 83 Cherry Hill."  He told me to get off his bus, that it wasn't my bus.  He was so rude, he didn't even offer any form of explanation as to why it wasn't our bus.  A very nice black lady explained that perhaps the sign for the destination was broken, but she did feel that he had been very rude.
We got back to our campsite and went down to the pool for a very welcome swim.  We met up with the others a bit later to share dinner and a bottle of wine.  This is the last dinner we will have together.  We've had a lot of laughs, seen and done a lot of amazing things.  Tomorrow our trip will finish in New York and everyone will go their own way.  Just one more camp pack up.
PS  Sophie & Mariam actually saw President Obama as he passed by in his presidential cavalcade,  can you believe that, we were all so jealous.
