Today we decided to travel on foot and mix in with the locals.  In the area of the Civic Centre which is just up the road from our digs a concert was in full swing.  I asked the police man on duty what it was all about, as I'd noticed that most of the audience were homeless or down and outs.  He said there is music played here every couple of weeks and they also bring down the food carts because this end of town doesn't usually get to try nice food.  Actually that was the part I was struggling with, because I didn't think the people at the concert would have had money to buy the food.  Must have got that wrong.
Just a little further around the corner is City Hall , and I have to say it's a lovely lovely building. Whilst we were waiting to cross the road we got involved in a great conversation with an engineer who is presently working on the new Oakland Bridge due to open this year.  Inside City Hall there was an art exhibition of photographs taken during construction.  We hope to visit that tomorrow as we had other plans today.  But what we did have time for was for Fred to crash another wedding picture.  The bride & groom were more than happy to have him in their wedding album.
We walked all the way through Chinatown, Little Italy and on to Pier 39.  In total we calculated we probably walked about 9 miles.  You really get a feel for a place when you walk the streets.  Along the way I think I spotted the church used in one of the dirty Harry movies, it's the one where a nutter is hiding up in the bell tower and shooting people. We also had to make way for a fire engine on a way to a fire, all noise and lights.  We saw a few arrests, a lady of the night who was dancing very provocatively outside the Hilton Hotel.  The doorman came out and picked up the phone, perhaps he was calling the cops, she took off immediately, but it looked pretty funny from our side of the road.  I did give an old lady who was begging what I thought was a quarter but it was in fact 5 cents.  She gave me a right round of f..ks, I thought how ungrateful.  We were half way down the street when Fred said " I think you gave her five cents, she probably thinks you're taking the mickey".
