Barcaldine is home to the Tree of Knowledge, this is where workers would meet to discuss how they could improve their pay and conditions. Australia's first Worker's Union was formed under this trees. As the saying goes from acorns, oak trees do grow, in this case, from these seeds the Australian labour party grew. A few years ago for either political reasons or darn right vandalism, the Tree of Knowledge was poisoned. I was so impressed by the clever way they have preserved this wonderful piece of history. A wooden box like structure sits above the preserved trunk of the original tree, when you stand inside the box and look up you appreciate what the artist has intended. Wood at various lengths are suspended from the top on steel rods which allows movement and gives you the impression of the trees canopy. It was a busy afternoon in Barcaldine as vintage peugeot cars rolled into town. They were all taking part in the Peugeot 53 Rally. This rally was first run in 1953, it's an around Australia race, 19,500K's in 25 days, starts and finishes in Maitland NSW. These cars look as if they should only be driven to the local shops on Sunday. Goes to show they don't make things like they use to.
Lloyd Jones Weir is going to be home for the next couple of days, it's a lovely free camp about 15k out of Barcaldine the weir has been built on a tributary of the Alice River. We had hardly got the vans parked before neighbours came wandering over for a chat
Just on dusk on the river I saw for the first time ever 2 baby pelicans, the battery on my camera was quite low so I'm hoping they reappear tomorrow night. Being as we are here for a couple of days, Fred & I have prepared a chicken curry which we will slow cook in the campoven, that will be dinner for the first 2 nights after we leave here. Before we put our curry on Mrs Sellers has whipped up a sweet damper. That was consumed around the campfire with a lovely cup of tea before bedtime.
Wish you were here!
