Cusco, the heart of the Inca Empire
Trip Start Jul 25, 2005

Cusco was once the heart of the Inca Empire, sadly most the architecture from the Inca period was burnt to the ground by the Spanish Conquestiadors. In there place stands (an admittedly beautiful) colonial city of cathedrals and plazas, overlooked by intricately carved wooden balconies.
We stayed at the stunning LOKI hostel, perched on the side of the mountain overlooking the city. Our room had walls 2m thick, murals from the 14th century still adorn the walls and the bar affords the most amazing views across the valley. The hostel was bought, renovated and is run by three guys (English, Irish & ) who came to Cusco on a week holiday 2yrs ago and have not been home since!
We spent a couple of days here, preparing for the Inca trail, by walking up and down the steep hill to the hostel, and getting some early nights! We were both nervous and excited by our upcoming adventure.
Then a totally bizarre moment, as we sat in the plaza drinking a vino tinto, we saw the Dali Lama drive past! Really! He was giving a speech on world peace, which Nicho managed to sucussfully sneak into....strange!
