We took a short break from the orphanage as a group of students from Dubai arrived at SASAC and went to Sikkim for some trekking. The next best think to Nepal with less disruptions right now. It was great to get our bodies moving up and down mountains and we saw some amazing monasteries complete with rythmic chanting and the musical din their instruments periodically created.
Even more so than Darjeeling you are thrown back many decades as you walk by men sawing lumber in the forests just like our Canadian pioneers did years ago. What really blew me away was how many people sit on a pile of big rocks and hit them with their hammer all day until they become gravel size.
I've never been very flexible... I'm the guy that yoga instructors joke about after class over their green tea. Just touching my knees is a stretch (pun intended). So it is with trepidation that I approach the squat toilets here. These are basically just a hole in the floor, often with two foot prints to help guide you to the target. From my 'squatting' height I can't help but feel like a high altitude bomber who constantly recalibrates his sights based on the damage below. From these loft heights direct hits are reason to celebrate and 'collateral damage' is inevitable.
