The landscapes in the Cappadocia region are incredible and the hillsides are riddled with dwelling and churches. Many of the people who lived here were Christian refugees who for months at a time took shelter in underground cities. One city we explored had eight levels and the had ingenious stone wheels that could be rolled to block passageways from attackers. The wheels have a hole in it so that anyone trying to break the rock could be stabbed by a spear.
We hiked and biked through this remarkable land, but the hilight was a sunrise hot-air balloon ride. Incredibly peaceful and the pilots here can move in and out of the valleys and between the rock features.
We bought a couple more Kilims at a place in Urgup that was recommened by Bill and Sheila. Unfortunately the owner was out so we were dealing with the temp. The bill came to 1,950 Turkish lira, but on my VISA he punched in just 19.50. That would have been quite a deal, but I pointed out his error. His next effort was 195. OK, we're getting closer. In the end there were 6 different VISA transactions and it was a very funny scene as we tried to communicate and work the whole deal through.
