On the way we stopped at The Beatles museum in Liverpool (it's a bylaw for anyone that works for a classic rock radio station if you are within 500 km's).
We all enjoyed staying put for a while in our cottage at Grasmere in the Lake District of northern England.
The country side is gorgeous with hiking trails everywhere in what can be described as manicured wilderness. We had several great hikes, you have to love a place where you can climb up over a mountain and end up at a pub for a beer in the next village. The amount of man hours that must have gone into the stone fences you see up and down the mountains is boggling. On one hike we found ourselves in a distant village and had missed the last bus at 5:30 pm. Quinn was quite upset at our `wreckless' decision to stick out our thumbs and hitch hike; fortuneately we were picked up by Jaunty (who has a brother in Calgary) and he drove us way out of his way and quite literally up and over a mountain to our door
We had a magical evening watching the play The Wind and the Willows overlooking Lake Coniston. The adventures of Mr. Toad.
On the way back to London we stopped at Warwick Castle. We had fun watching the falconry and jousting. We missed the trebuchet demonstration that can fire a rock up to 300 metres.
We also stopped in at Oxford and were turned away for being minutes late. Deb was the hero for getting us in the back door (one more reason we love her) and we ejoyed a Harry Potter moment in the dining hall (the Hogwart's hall was designed from this).
Arriving back to Dan's place I was feeling rather proud of myself for despite lots of wincing and holding my breath on the narrow roads and many near misses, there wasn't one new scatch on his van. And so trying to be the perfect guests I set off to vaccuum and wash the car at the corner gas station. Now I should mention that England has many different word that mean something different than in Canada: a truck is a lorrie, a boot is a car trunk and I now know that car wash means car compactor.
Now to be fair I was in a north american sized van and I was perhaps one inch to the right of centre... at any rate this diabolical machine grabbed hold of the right front panel and wouldn't let go until I offered up my soul as an equitable trade. When it finally released me from its grasp, I read the fine print under the car wash sign. They guarantee to convert a Hummer into a Smart car in just 6 'washings'.

WOW, Hi and all that!
Sure enjoying reading your blogs. The kids are all set to start school tomorrow. We'll try not to think of all the fun you are having, instead of the usual morning panic and chaufeur shuffle.
