Well my first impression of Dubrovnik was I thought it was overhyped. Clearly it is a very nice city with white marble sidewalks and old white buildings everywhere surrounded by city walls that were pretty cool, but other than how well maintained everything was I really didn't think the city was all that much nicer than Kotor and on top of that Kotor had better views from above including a nice fjord and minus the massive influx of tourists. I'd say 90% of the people you run into in Dubrovnik are tourists, about 2/3 of them with their cameras out, etc. Not their fault but I'm just saying there is something about literally bumping into other tourists every 2 secs that takes away the ambience of a place. So on a hype vs. reality I would rate Kotor Montenegro much higher than Dubrovnik. One of the problems as I see it is that Dubrovnik has become a major port for cruises and when you cram thousands of cruisers into a small old town like Dubrovnik I don't think it is a good mix. Now, having said that, the walk on the city walls was cool, and walking around at night the second night I got a much different impression of the city. The streets were not jam packed and instead everywhere was lit up and the marble streets were shining. The atmoshphere was very surreal, it reminded me of being in a make believe place like Disneyland only it was a real city. Hard to describe but Dubrovnik at night I think makes the trip worthwhile. Overall, I think certain places are great until the whole world hears about it and then it is too late. I think for Dubrovnik it is a little too late for such a small place, at least in the summer. Maybe the winter/off-season would be better. I'm not one of these people that is always paranoid about places that are touristy (a word?), but this was on a whole different level. I've heard similar stories about Venice which is why I've avoided that city to date. If you don't mind that stuff, Dubrovnik is nice, if you do, I'd skip it and maybe check out Kotor which is about 3 hrs away by bus.
