We had a big Christmas dinner of roast beef, turkey, stuffing, and roasted potatoes at a restaurant run by a British expat - our most authentic western food in the past two months!
We rented bikes, explored local caves (Tham Hoi went back for 3km underground!), and tubed down the Nam Song River, stopping with new friends for drinks along the way. We had a great time swinging on the trapeze then dropping into the water below and jumped off a 30-foot-high platform into the river. Good times!
A completely inebriated Lao family invited us to their table for food and wine. Turns out one of them was the restaurant owner, who didn't seem too excited to be sharing his table with a couple of scruffy backpackers, but we laughed a lot while they hopelessly tried to teach us a Lao New Year's song.
Also enjoyed a day of lounging in a bamboo cabana, dangling our feet in the river, and sipping banana pineapple shakes.
Though there wasn't much authentically "Lao" about our Vang Vieng experience, it was refreshing to touch back in with a place that felt closer to home and we enjoyed our time here.
We miss sharing the holidays with all of you - waaahhh!
