Well my plan to leave early and beat the traffic out of here (unfortunately hauling a heavy bike around is not conducive to sight seeing and although Charleston is a very pretty town with lots of history I am not really on a sight seeing tour and to get out of the down town chaos in one piece was higher on my list of things to do) was corrupted by a surge of early risers who have lights and can therefore start before sun rise. I dont want to cycle in anything but perrfect day light so I was limited to starting at 7ish when traffic was at a high. I waited for this reason until around 10 am when I joine dmy old friend Highway 17 and continued north. NOw to get out of Charleston and head towards the next plkace (Georgetown) I needed to cross 2 bridges, the first was steep but fine and the second one began OK but then oh my GOD. I can see now why maps have been made especially for cyclists who want to live to another year of age. I guess I entered the bridge using an entrance designed mainly with car traffic in mind, but not illegal for cyclists who have *alls of steel or just no brain. The bridge ia good mile long and 4 lanes in either direction so there is a lot of traffic on this thing, in 99 deg I was sweating a ton. I had to cross 2 lanes of fast traffic to get to the shoulder and then find there was a bike lane but impossible to get to through a concrete wall. Nice. But I came out OK but refused to cut back across the lanes again to take my exit, worried about getting pulled over for a brain scan and/or run over, so I took the long way around. After that episode nothing could shack me so I carried on up 17 for 70 miles to Georgetown, and the steepest bridge yet. The first thoughts of this place were......factory land and steel works, lovely. But on closer inspection it was in fact a lovely place with great neighbourhoods and a very historic undertone. THje high street was quaint and the people nice, met a couple from North London even! THe motel was nice and the swimming pool got some use, although nearly stepped on a black Widow spider on the way out. Whoops
Ate sooooo much take out pizza in an attempt to stop myself losing weight. Didnt work. This sun is a perfect weight lose agent. Will be back on 17 for the cross in Norht Carloina tomorrow but not sure how far I will go before legs / mind give up for the day. I have to meet Pat in Wilmington on Friday and thats 120 miles maybe it'll be a fair split of 60 a piece or a little more tomz just to get out of the ritzy glitzy horrible neon lights of Myrtle Beach, the equivalent to Blackpool for you Brits reading this. Cheers for now
