Hi Everyone,

Very quick blog entry made in a hotel down route.  Good blast through urban Riverside and out into the country.  Overcast, windy and 48F, UK summer!  Crossed the San Andreas Fault.  Ended below sea level in Indio after an 87 mile day.  Mostly on back roads but tomorrow we hit the freeway and the huge 'semi' trucks going past at 70 mph.  We had a brief experience today and even the Americans were concerned.  Imagine riding on the hard shoulder of the M1 in strong cross winds, a legal 75mph speed limit and trucks somewhat bigger than in the UK clipping past your left elbow - you get the picture.

On the way we passed through Palm Springs.  On the road down to the town past the wind farms (there is a clue there) the winds were very strong.  At one stage we were coasting in the around 35 mph wind and by spinning hard it was possible to make 38 mph.  This was all very well until we turned across the main canyon and then we were riding in strong gusting crosswinds.  I have never held onto a bike as strongly as I did through this section of about 1 mile.

The ride into Indio where there was a bar-b-q laid on was a doddle by comparison.

No scurvy!
