Where I stayed
Airport Ramada St. Rose LA
So, we're headed to The Crescent City on April 9 and will return to Puddletown on the 24th. We're looking forward to exploring and to visiting Jim and Maine in Auburn. Seems we'll be in Auburn on A Day which is the annual Spring scrimmage. That could prove to be interesting.
I messed up when making our plane reservations. Originally I'd allowed us Saturday the 9th for packing and thus reserved our Worldmark by Wyndam unit for check-in on Sunday the 10th. Well, I forgot that when I made the plane plans.Booked the flight to arrive in NO on the 9th. Just happened to look at the details last week and discovered my error. Of course there is nothing available on that Saturday night at the Avenue Plaza (our resort). There is something on Friday, but not on Saturday. Looked into what was happening in town and that is the French Quarter Festival weekend. We have a fall back reservation at the airport Ramada, but I'd much prefer to arrive and unpack only once. Time will tell.
It is now the aforementioned Saturday the 9th of April and we are safely ensconced in the Airport Ramada Inn in St. Rose LA. Our cab came promptly at 4am this morning (PST) and we arrived at PDX with plenty of time to adjust the weight in the large suitcases. JG was right on 50 pounds but I had to take 8 out of mine. Did 6 on the first try and then got the last 2 transferred to the Rick Steves carry-on. Went through security and down to the gate. At the gate we were told that there would probably be no room for items in the overheard bins because the flight was so full, so we got the carry-on checked through to MSY (New Orleans) for no charge. I had a chance to start on the Painted Caves, but only got a little bit into the second chapter before it was time to load.
Four hours and change in to Atlanta.Very uneventful flight. When we exited the gate I expected to find connecting flight information quite readily but that was not the case. I asked someone at a gate and she gave us the information -- in another terminal, of course. So, down to the connector area, down the escalators, across two walkways, back up the escalator and then to the gate. Once more arrived in plenty of time.
On to New Orleans in about an hour. Got the luggage fine and checked with WorldMark to see if we could get into the Avenue Plaza tonight, but there was nothing available. Called the Ramada and was told we could catch a ride "just outside the baggage claim area." Went outside in the warmth and humidity and finally saw a van and tried to hail it but was ignored. Called the Ramada again and got more specific directions. "At the transportation center in the garage outside the baggage claim area." We met the driver and were soon at the motel.
The desk was totally deserted, There was a woman looking for information and the phone was ringing off the hook, but the gal on duty was nowhere to be found. She finally showed up and we got into our room (214). We decided to nap a bit and did so for about an hour and a half. Once we were back up we went down to check out what transportation options we had to get in to town. Essentially the only avenue was taxi, at a charge of about $45 one way. We decided to not go into town and went to the Voodoo BBQ & Grill restaurant next door. We had sweet tea, BBQ shrimp platters with different sides -- JG had cole slaw and rattlesnake beans and RC had corn pudding and fresh steamed veggies (broccoli florets and baby carrots). No dessert -- had toffee from JaCiva's instead.
After dinner we walked through the local area a bit and JG got over 10M -- RC has more steps to go.
Back into the room it was computer time. JG worked on her journal on the laptop. RC played chess, downoaded and installed Open Office, located this blog and did the entry. RC is now getting his feet lotioned. Time to close.
