Arrival! I arrived in Anchorage today after a hairy morning. I awoke to find snow on the ground- and it was still coming down. The road to Anchorage, I knew, was not an easy one- it carved through mountains and I could only speculate on its condition in the snow and ME with my all-weather tires. But I packed up anyway, hoping the snow would stop.
Down the road I went- through the mountains- up and down. The worst the snow got was about 1 or 2 inches on the road- driving down like white fragile bullets. After that pass, the snow turned to cold drizzle and I made my way into Glenallen for lunch. There was a bar/restaurant/gift shop like of place there and I had some lunch.
The road continued to meander down through curvy roads warning of avalanche danger and I was careful to KEEP MOVING despite the scenery. However, I did manage to stop over to look at a glacier- talk about huge. It was a huge glacier. Enormous- it filled the entire valley floor. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before.
By the time I arrived in Palmer, the skies were clearing up and blue peaked through gray clouds. The trees in Palmer began to have more leaves on them- golden and glinting in the pale fall sun. I drove right into Anchorage, around Anchorage. I stopped at Earthquake Park, drove out to Beluga point and on down towards Seward for a bit. I didn't want my trip to be over- ever. I just wanted to keep driving. The sad thing is that there are not that many roads in Alaska... and you can't drive for an infinite amount of time without heading back out to Canada or right into the ocean.
So I finally called Rachel (my roommate), told her I was in town, and got semi-directions back into town to settle down.... and get to work.
