In 1940 Holland was bombed by the Germans. They bombed the four main transport routes in and out of Holland - by wrecking the bridges across the 4 main rivers. My dad rode his bicycle over 8 days and 380km as part of his Vacantie 1. One of two cycle holidays he took alone. (The second was about 1948 when he had three children under 5, and wanted to know whether to leave Holland to make a future for his growing family.)

Knowing all young Dutch men were herded to work in German factories I believe he was secretly looking for an escape route and hiding place. He had met the love of his life, Johanna the year before and they were engaged to be married.
In his honour and with an equal love of the bicycle, I want to re-ride his route around Holland nearly 70 years later. Of course that route was in a figure 8! The shape he loved. And it will end in Scheveningen, with lots of fresh herring of course!

this is the first time Michael and I have been OS.
