The flight from Bangkok to Bali featured an unexpected surprise: while flying down the north coast of the island of Java, I chanced upon an eruption of Mt. Merapi. Merapi had recently come to life with a series of small eruptions, and this morning I caught the beginning of the largest eruption to date. I was filming the various volcanoes which poked their heads above the clouds, and just after passing Merapi, I noticed that there was a plume of ash rising from the peak.

"The volcano is eupting!" I exclaimed to the people in the row behind me, but they either didn't understand English, didn't want to turn around to look, or were just oblivious to what that meant. Anyway, I got a bit of it on film, which you can see in the attached video.
