This morning we enjoyed another tasty breakfast at our hotel consisting of eggs, franks & beans, rice or noodles and fresh yellow watermelon. We hadn't had coffee since New Zealand (the Tea was great in India & Nepal) but regardless this Malay 'java' was delicious.

A 30 minute ride on a 3rd transit system, the Komuter - similar to the GO Train in Toronto - had us out of the city to visit the Batu Caves. The land sharply rose from the valley extending from downtown KL off in the distance housing the caves. After climbing up 272 steps (peanuts after Nepal!) the entrance to a MASSIVE cave was revealed. This is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus in January & February. Since its May, it felt like we had the place mostly to ourselves (we later saw a postcard that had a standing room only crowd shuffling up the steps and into the cave!).

The scale of the halls was incredible. The vibrant green of the foliage carried through small and large tunnels in the rock by the bright sun while water slowly dripped down stalactites created a pleasantly natural aura despite some of the manmade trappings of the shrine. This was a strong contrast with the bustle of KL.

On our way back into town we booked our bus across the peninsula to the eastern shore and the town of Mersing where tomorrow we will catch a ferry to Palau (island) Tioman for some diving and a taste of the equatorial jungle. We spent the rest of the day in KL attending to other logistics, stopping at a street side vendor en route to an internet café for what turned out to be one of our best meals of the trip so far. We shared a simple veg & egg fried noodle and the same with rice. The dishes were nothing exotic but simply delicious; not to mention extremely cheap.

A late night snack of ice cream from the 7-11 had us well fed and ready for bed.
