Ironically, the day we left Cairns (after torrential downpours) it was bright and sunny. The forecast didn't predict it would last. That seems to be the way the weather goes on the Great Barrier Reef.
Arriving in Brisbane, we hopped on the train down to the Gold Coast. While on the train, Eli noticed a guy facing him, about 8 seats away. He was smiling eagerly with an incredulous look in his eye while doing his best to hold back a snicker. It appeared to Eli that he had overheard the 2 young women behind him talking AND upon further observation that they were not speaking English (Eli guessed and still can't confirm it was German)
We hooked up with an old mate of Eli's from University, Gregg Thatcher, who is living in Nobby Beach and enjoyed catching up with him as well as his parents who were visiting from Wasaga Beach.
Around noon the next day, with a (6'3" firewire) surf board courtesy of Thatcher Surf Shop, we went to the beach.
Eli hit the surf while Mia enjoyed the blue sky and shining sun. With a smaller board and the outgoing tide, the waves were few and far between but good for Eli to get some time on the board.
We retired to our hotel with salad, chicken and fruit for dinner. We also stopped at the massive liquor store next door. Mia picked up a bottle of "Clean Skin" wine for $2.99 - this is overstock wine, from multiple wineries, that is sold off at a substantial discount. It was deeeeee-licious Chardonnay and she (almost) finished the bottle herself. Gotta love Australia.
