I left Kilifi in a matatu with a working tape player. I had heard about a big reggae show that was moving up the coast from Mombasa. I figured I could catch it in Malindi, on my way to Lamu. I arrived around mid-day and settled into town with some ugali and greens and a third-story corner hotel room. The breeze blows stronger up high.

Later I went to the show, which turned out to be a d.j. showcase, featuring the man called King Kong, a midget d.j. who has to stand on a stool to play his tunes. I came thinking I'd see Roots Radics, Misty in Roots, and Sista Irie, but I guess they hit Mombasa only. It was nice anyway. Everyone was getting down. I am wishing I had my camera in the dance. I didn't see another mzungu. The power only went off once and came right back on. I was drinking Guiness all night.
