Patrick offered me one more trip. This time I only had to pay for gas. He was going to keep the fish or sell them at market.
It was a tough day. The wind was blowing hard and the fish weren't biting. Eventually we went to his best captain fish spot. Across the river, the sardines were going crazy. A huge school was making a big scene on the surface. I was sure there were big fish crashing them and Patrick obliged to check it out. We didn't catch any big fish, but he had a simple rig for catching these sardines. We took a couple of them live back to the other side and dropped them down.
Patrick got a huge bite on the biggest sardine. It cut his leader. He immediately said, "Barracuda." We tied on some wire leaders with no luck. Eventually a decent captain fish bit. And finally, a big fish bit. It took a few minutes to get him to the boat and get the gaff in him, but we managed, even without a wire leader. Apparently it is quite rare to boat a barracuda with regular fishing line. We did it.
Both fish were caught on a white curly tail soft plastic jig with 1.5 oz. round lead jig heads.
