Where I stayed
Walk down Elizabeth Street, to Flinders Street, ask where I can get a ticket for a tram out to St. Kilda as I just want to get out the city!!! the guy tells me to go to Federation Square and get a tram from there, perfect sense, yeah right!! I go round to Federation Square and go to the Tourist Information Centre, have a look around there, have a chat with a nice lady behind the counter who tells me to walk back up to Collins street to get the tram from there as the other line has disruptions on it. I buy my all day ticket for $3.10 for all the zones, sorted!! I go back up to Federation Square, look at the map, walk up to Collins street, 15minutes later the tram appears and I jump on. We go through the city and I see a stop, Albert Park, I can't remember what the park's are called around Melbourne, but decide to get off and have a walk around. I can't see the park but can see a lake. I walk over and find lots of runners, walkers and children around, I think it's about 10:30ish by now
I walk around the lake for about an hour and decide I'll go find the tram stop or a tram stop and continue to St. Kilda. I can see the tram moving along, can hear and see cars, but can't get to the bloody road!!! There's a big fence, I walk around, thinking how to get over to the tram stop, if there's one there, start to get stressed because I think I have to walk all the way back to where I started which is a number of K's back in the opposite direction. I finally find a gap in the fence which is actually a tram stop, SCORE!! but find the tram is 15minutes away when I finally work out the weird timetable printed on a board. I get my Australia (this is going to be my bible while I'm here) book out my bag and look for backpackers in St. Kilda, then the tram arrives. I hop on, get off on Fitzroy street, stand there wondering which direction to go, then see Grey Street which I remember has a backpackers on.
First backpackers, go in and ask if they have a female dorm, they do, I ask to have a look, go up, it's dark and pretty messy with stuff everywhere around the room, no thanks. Back downstairs talking to the girl and ask of any others in the area, then leave.
I walk back down to the tram stop, and follow my nose forward past little shops, cafe selling yummy smelling breakfast. I find the beach, finally, walk over to a bench, and get my bible out again. Find where I am and look for some places to stay. I find one and walk towards it. I walk past a street market so decide to slow down and have a quick look. Cross the street in the direction of the backpackers. Past Base, a chain of backpackers like the YHA. Onto another place.
I go back along the street to Base.
Third backpackers, Base, ask if they have a female dorm, they do, it's $34 a night!!!! my mouth drops to the floor but he proceeds to tell me it's called the Sanctuary, it better had be for that price!!, with fluffy towels, shampoo, conditioner and champagne. I say I'm just looking about for somewhere, then leave. No chance I'm spending that much!!
Fourth backpackers, St. Kilda Beach house which is no where near the beach!! I find it, go in, the girl keeps calling me hun, ask to have a look at the room, she gives me a key to go up, up two flights of stairs, to a dark hallway that I'm sure is painted black, nice colour, open the door, there are 10 bunks, it's $21 a night, another dark room with black paint, the curtains are closed and it smells
I go back onto the street and ring a place to see how much it is, they tell me, I forget and then say I'll be down in a bit. Past a shell garage, grab a bottle of water as I'm parched, and a curly wurky because I'm starving!!
I go back to the second backpackers, check in, have a shower as I feel discusting, it's not hot, but it's warm, get ready, then go down to the TV room. I stay down here for about an hour watching the bloody rally, Dad would of loved this, but I hated it! but I stayed because I didn't know what else to do.
Then I leave and walk down into St. Kilda, grab a bag of hot chicken bits, which aren't that nice but only 70cents, and walk through the main street. The whole street is covered in cafe and little shops, cafe splurge out onto the street with people laughing, talking and drinking a mixture of wine, coffee and other random things and eating nice food, with me scoffing down my chicken bits. I walk through all this, and find that it's Buskers week in St. Kilda and there is a boy trying to juggle, but failing, and a guy dressed as Elvis with a bit of a crowd on a very narrow street, just about get by and go down to the beach. I sit here for a while to just relax from my walking the streets of Melbourne, through Albert Park, finding my backpackers for the night and contemplate what I'm going to do next
Back to the backpackers I go, take a photo, hope you can just about make it out, I'm the top room on the left of the place, the first two windows. Then I go back to the TV room for a bit, back up to the room where I talk to a Scottish girl who tells me the sunset is gorgeous and I should go check it out later. The afternoon passes by with me chilling on the bed, reading my bible and other things I have picked up, then it's 5:15. I walk as fast as I can past all the cafes, to the beach, the sunset is gorgeous over the city. I stay here for about 40minutes because it's getting cold and I'm hungry. I go have something to eat and feel sick because I feel like I've just eaten a cow, it's the largest meal I've had since arriving and feel genuinely bad. Back to the backpackers where Mum and Dad ring, have a quick chat with them, then down to the TV room where Titanic is showing, the boat still sinks and I'm falling asleep by 9:30 on a comfy chair. Up to the room, ready for bed, read a bit more, then sleep.
